Memento (still life)

A solo exhibition of new and recent works by Evan Salmon, marking his return to still life after his predominant engagement with en plein air painting since 2010. The arrangements of everyday objects in strange company—scissors on paint tubes, light bulbs in a latex glove, kitchen implements alongside art historical references—are presented with classical precision. Art history is woven throughout, sometimes literally: postcards and reproductions by Matisse, Daumier, Vermeer, and others are incorporated into the compositions, diffused and distorted alongside domestic objects. Salmon's deliberate staging and informed study of proportion, spatial relation, and light's movement over reflective and dulled surfaces drive these gatherings.
