Isabella Edwards: Surrounds

Gallery LNL presents Surrounds, featuring new works by Isabella Edwards. Places and memories surround her ceramics as painted landscapes and interiors wrap the surfaces of her vessels. Edwards grew up in St. Albans, rural NSW, and now lives on the Central Coast. Working from her photographic practice, she combines the natural beauty and human everyday of both areas—empty train tracks at Koolewong Station, backyards on laundry day with towels sagging along clotheslines over green grass. In these places, Edwards finds surroundings ripe for memory and remembering. Like vessels, places hold memory. Her painted vessels contain inner spaces where memories are held. Edwards separates these two capacities of place—to surround and to hold—while showing the impossibility of a clean distinction. Her work might be termed landscape ceramics, emphasising both her use of painting to surround and of ceramics to hold in her personal study of place and memory.
