Way Through

Way Through is Patrick Hartigan's second solo exhibition with 1301SW. Following his 2025 Melbourne presentation, which surveyed 15 years of his distinctive practice, this exhibition in Sydney consists entirely of new paintings. As always, Hartigan's surfaces help to ground gesture and develop paintings as sites of destruction and renewal. The surfaces and materials contain a luminosity, where what lies beneath emits and releases energy through openings and slipstreams that draw attention to the whole. Within the larger group of works sits a selection of dwellings. Here the façades and overall structures act as possible metaphors for the way paintings operate: framing, flattening, and providing glimpses of interiority.
