Australia's first dedicated exhibition of superstar Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. A major retrospective in the Ainsworth Family Gallery and the global premiere of new work in the Nelson Packer Tank. Spanning 30 years and more than 150 works, the exhibition traces his practice from the explosive innovations of the 1990s to new works currently being created in his studio. Featuring paintings, sculptures, video and large-scale installations, the exhibition reveals the evolution of Murakami's signature 'Superflat' aesthetic—where art, subculture and commercial imagery meld with influences from anime to historical Japanese painting. Early works demonstrate his search for a visual language responding to a globalising Japan, while later works expand into a universe of cartoon-like characters, smiling flowers and saturated scenes. The exhibition charts Murakami's emergence as a defining figure of contemporary art and popular culture, showing how he bridges tradition and technology, humour and critique. Developed in collaboration with Takashi Murakami, this Sydney-exclusive exhibition is presented as part of the 2026–27 Sydney International Art Series.
